Your relationship will change and there is no doubt about it. We are not saying it will change for the worse, hopefully it will be for the better, but either way there may be a period of adjustment.

A brand new, noisy, demanding little human has arrived to live with you forever and it takes time to find a new rhythm and way of doing things. For heterosexual couples, no matter how much we wish that we could have complete sexual equality, this is one time where the woman usually bears a lot of the emotional and physical load. For women, things change dramatically overnight. It is the woman who has given birth and if you want the baby to be breastfed, it is the woman who will be feeding the baby.

Some partners adapt quickly to the change in home life, others ignore the change, and their social life and professional life continue unaffected. And many are somewhere in between. Either way, for some women, it can be difficult to see your partner head off to work or the pub while you are confined to the sofa with the task of keeping your offspring alive! We are generalising of course, but the change is massive and you should be aware that it may take some time to work things out together.
